Modern Barbering, Technical Hand On Workshop
A full-day, hands-on barbering workshop built around structure, control and a clearer understanding of modern haircutting.
Hosted by Gents Academy Co at Rascal & Rogues in Dunedin, this one-day intensive course is designed to help barbers approach modern styles with more confidence, consistency and purpose.
The workshop is based around the Gents Academy Blueprint: a structured approach to understanding the haircut before simply cutting it. Rather than relying on repetition or copying a finished image, the Blueprint helps barbers work through the fundamentals, shape, technique and mechanics behind the result.
Throughout the day, you will take part in live demonstrations, technical breakdowns and hands-on practical work designed to strengthen the way you assess, plan and execute a haircut.

What You’ll Learn
The Gents Academy Blueprint
An introduction to the structured thinking behind every haircut.
You will learn how to move through the key stages of the Gents Academy approach: understanding the individual, identifying the shape required, selecting the correct technique and applying the mechanics needed to create the result with precision.
The goal is not to memorise one haircut. It is to understand a repeatable method that can be adapted across different clients, styles and hair types.
Understanding Shape
Learn how to identify and control the overall shape of a haircut instead of focusing only on fades, sections or isolated techniques.
The workshop will explore how shape influences balance, weight, movement and the final silhouette of the haircut.
Head Shape and Hair Behaviour
Develop a better understanding of how head shape, hair density, growth patterns, facial features and existing length affect the decisions you make before cutting.
These fixed factors are central to creating a result that is realistic, balanced and suited to the individual.
Structured Sectioning
Learn how clear mapping and sectioning create the framework for a more controlled haircut.
A structured sectioning approach helps define where one technique finishes and another begins, allowing you to work in a more methodical and efficient way.
Shape Control
Understand how different cutting decisions affect the vertical and horizontal shape of a haircut.
The course will introduce the principles behind building, retaining or removing weight and how these choices influence the finished style.
Technique Selection
Explore how different techniques can be used to create stronger, softer, heavier or more fluid results.
Rather than using techniques automatically, you will learn to choose them based on the shape and outcome you are trying to achieve.
Cutting Mechanics
Strengthen your understanding of the mechanics that sit behind precision cutting, including control, consistency, body position, elevation, over-direction and the accuracy of your cutting line.
These details are what turn a basic process into a deliberate and repeatable system.
Modern Barbering Application
See how the Gents Academy structure can be applied to relevant modern barbering styles.
The focus will be on understanding why the haircut works, not simply copying a step-by-step demonstration.
Hands-On Practical Work
You will apply the principles from the demonstrations through guided practical work.
The hands-on format gives you the opportunity to ask questions, correct technical habits and receive direct support throughout the day.
